
Dr. Sitare Turan Bakır graduated from the Department of Traditional Turkish Art at Mimar Sinan University in Istanbul (1986). She continued her study and completed her master’s degree at SOAS in London (1987) and doctoral degree at Istanbul University (1994). Professor Bakir participated in the 5th Competition of Turkish Decorative Art which was organized by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 1990 and won the first prize in the tile category. In the same year, her tile designs were awarded at a private mansion named Al-Haret in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Professor Bakir is currently the Head of the Department of Traditional Turkish Art in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Mimar Sinan University.
Prof. Dr. Bakır has attended many international congresses and symposiums, and participated in research and international meetings and exhibitions on Turkish Art. She has numerous publications on Turkish tiles and ceramics, including, “Ottoman Ceramics with Animal Figures,” Seramik Türkiye, Journal of Turkish Ceramics Federation, 4, (Istanbul, April-June 2004), p. 70-78 and “Vase Motif in Multi-Coloured Iznik Ceramics”, Seramik Türkiye, Journal of Turkish Ceramics Federation, 8, (Istanbul, Mart-Nisan 2005), p. 112-119. Prof. Dr. Bakır is an executive committee member of MSGSÜ, Research and Application Center for Turkish Art History, a trustee for Türk Kültürüne Hizmet Vakfı, and an executive committee member of Mimar Sinan Research Center.
